The Texas Longhorns beat Texas A&M on Friday night to finish the regular season 9-3 and 6-2 in SEC play. Coming into the weekend, the Longhorns were very much on the outside looking in of the playoff picture and would need a ton of help to sneak in after making it to the semifinals last year.
The argument Texas is trying to make is that had they not scheduled Ohio State to open the season, they would be in the top ten. The issue for Texas is that they want us all to forget that they lost to a Billy Napier-led Florida Gators squad.
Texas wants us to forget they lost to Florida
Do you want to know the team that gave up the most points to Florida this season, not counting FCS Long Island?
That would be Texas.
Do you want to know which FBS team besides Mississippi State has lost to Florida this year?
That would be Texas.
Do you want to know who is going to get left out of the playoffs because they lost to Florida?
That would be Texas.
The problem with the argument that Texas is trying to make about their non-conference schedule is that their other three non-conference games were San Jose State, UTEP, and Sam Houston.
Texas didn't exactly blow out those first teams either.
The Longhorns also had to go to overtime to beat Kentucky and Mississippi State.
The Longhorns were also blown out by Georgia.
So while yes, Texas does have wins over Oklahoma, Vanderbilt, and now Texas A&M, they also have one teeny, tiny issue on their resume that no other team has:
They lost to Florida.
Had Texas just had the two losses to Ohio State and Georgia, the Longhorns would not only be in the playoffs with some room to spare, they possibly could have clinched a spot in the SEC title game next week, depending on how other things shake out.
But Longhorn fans, you gave more points than anyone to a Florida offense that is going to go down as one of the five worst Florida offenses in the last 50 years.
I'm sorry your season died in The Swamp, but in 2025, you don't get to lose to Florida and then try to throw your weight around.
