The SEC Power Rankings are back and better than ever!
Hello conference chaos! Nice to meet you and I expect to see you for the rest of the season because someone is guaranteed to lose an important game every week from here until the end of the season. The big goal right now, is positioning for one of those top-12 spots in the initial CFP Rankings on Nov. 3.
That makes an already important Week 9 even more crucial, because once you're outside the top 15 in the CFP rankings, it's very hard to squeeze back in. And for teams that already have two losses, that third loss is still devastating, at least in 2026. Next year, three losses will make you a lock, but that's another story for another time.
Here are your SEC Power Rankings heading into Week 9:
1) Georgia Bulldogs (6-1, 4-1)
They were still No. 1 after losing to Auburn in Week 7, so a bye week wasn't going to change anything. Georgia, however, has a lot to prove against Florida. These are the games that Kirby Smart teams have traditionally won with the type of football he likes to play. We'll see if that trend continues in 2026.
2) Kentucky Wildcats (7-1, 5-1)
What if the Wildcats were actually just good? This surge is being treated as if it's lightning in a bottle, and I understand why, but Kentucky might actually be a legitimate top-10 to top-15 team in college football this year. The final four games will be tough, but many of the first eight games were tough too!
3) LSU Tigers (6-2, 3-2)
The Tigers have three straight elimination games coming up with Alabama, Texas, and at Tennessee. The third game on that gauntlet could be the one that really proves to be the backbreaker or the game that launches LSU into the playoffs. You do get the feeling that the Tigers are playing their best football at the right time.
4) Alabama Crimson Tide (6-2, 4-2)
It wasn't an impressive performance from the Crimson Tide in their Week 8 win over Texas A&M, but this current edition of Alabama has lost that game in the past. After last week's crushing defeat to Tennessee, just escaping a tough game with a win should be considered a positive step forward.

5) Texas Longhorns (5-2, 2-2)
6) Florida Gators (5-2, 3-2)
7) Ole Miss Rebels (5-2, 3-2)
8) Tennessee Volunteers (6-2, 3-2)
9) Missouri Tigers (5-2, 2-2)
The beauty of this group of five is that the playoffs are not just a pipe dream; they are a reality if they can run the table. And in Texas' case, it still might have a loss to spare, depending on how the Longhorns manage these final five games.
Florida is in a must-win situation this week against Georgia and for the remainder of the season. Not all losses are created equal and the fashion in which the Gators' loss to Missouri and South Carolina would be held against them if they got on the CFP bubble.
The one team that I'm least certain about is Ole Miss. The Rebels look more like a Citrus/Gator/ReliaQuest Bowl team than a playoff team. A loss to Auburn this week or Georgia in Week 10 could be the nail in their coffin.

10) South Carolina Gamecocks (4-3, 2-3)
11) Oklahoma Sooners (4-3, 2-2)
12) Texas A&M Aggies (4-4, 1-4)
13) Auburn Tigers (4-3, 2-2)
14) Mississippi State Bulldogs (4-3, 2-3)
Can South Carolina actually fight its way onto the CFP bubble? Absolutely. If the Gamecocks can win their next three very winnable games (at Oklahoma, Texas A&M, and at Arkansas), they will be a top-20 team heading into a home game against Georgia on Nov. 21. You have to respect Shane Beamer's team for flipping the script on what looked to be a very disappointing season after one month.
Speaking of disappointing, it has to be disheartening for Mississippi State fans to watch their season go up in smoke after the injury to Kamario Taylor. The Bulldogs' CFP hopes were probably overstated, but they were a fun team to watch and were having a fun season. All that fun has gone away with this three-game losing skid.
These two are still holding it down at the bottom
15) Arkansas Razorbacks (3-4, 1-3)
16) Vanderbilt Commodores (3-5, 0-5)
It's difficult to see Arkansas winning another game this season, but Ryan Silverfield probably did enough to avoid being a one-and-done. Meanwhile, Vanderbilt's best shot at a conference win will be on Nov. 7 against Mississippi State.
