All throughout the offseason, Jon Sumrall has done everything in his power to get Gator fans to jump on board and buy in ahead of his maiden season in Gainesville. Sumrall knows he wasn’t the first pick among fans at Florida, but he has made it his mission to put himself out there, and he appeared on nearly every Gator podcast he could find.
But last week at SEC Media Days was Sumrall’s formal introduction to the national media, since most of those members aren’t scouring podcasts dedicated to the Gators, and most came away impressed.
But as ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt points out, all the will that Sumrall has built now hinges on his ability actually to win on the field.

On his SVPod, Van Pelt was on the topic of Sumrall, and he likes everything he has seen from Florida’s new coach this offseason. He also knows Sumrall hasn’t had to face the wrath of a tough loss:
“His energy is incredible. People are in. When you're that energy, and you're that talk-it-walk kind of thing, you've got to win. I'm saying he's playing it right as an energy to get things going, to try to get people on board. They'll turn on you in a second.
The easiest thing, you've heard me say it 100 times, easiest thing in the world for a new coach to do is sell energy and optimism in August. You just better win.”
Van Pelt would go on to highlight that Sumrall is aware of this too and has acknowledged that he is in the deep end by being a coach in the SEC.

All I do is win, win, win
We here at Hail Florida Hail have given a similar disclaimer all offseason, even as Sumrall has gone on his whirlwind tour. We stated last week, while highlighting that he was a great cultural fit for Florida, that:
“Jon Sumrall has a chance to be that unicorn who is both a cultural fit and who wins a lot of games.
He has part one down.
Part two remains to be seen.”
For us in year one, the biggest thing we are going to be looking for is that if and when Florida does lose, what are the reasons for those losses?
Is it because the offensive line he inherited was too dilapidated, or is it because of a lack of organization? Is it due to limited QB play because of what he inherited, or does he get too conservative late in games? Is his defense just not quite fast enough, or are there constant coverage busts?
These are all things we don’t know yet.
Because it is worth noting that we tried to defend the previous coach in Gainesville during his first season, and we had optimism he too would work out. Where we here at Hail Florida Hail began to turn on Billy Napier was starting with his 2023 loss to Arkansas, when his lack of organization had nothing to do with the talent level in Gainesville.
Do we think Sumrall will have the same problems?
As of now, no.
But Van Pelt's disclaimer is worth keeping in the back of everyone’s mind as 2026 gets underway.
