We should get clarity this weekend

Florida continues to hold its breath on whether or not Lane Kiffin is going to be its next head coach, the Gators are having to keep other candidates in mind.

As we have done the past three weeks, we are ranking the top ten coaches we personally at Hail Florida Hail would want to see the Gators hire.

This isn't a list based on who Florida would actually hire. This is based on who we think is the best fit in Gainesville.

No. 10 Eli Drinkwitz - Missouri

One of the tidbits dropped over the weekend is that while Florida's administration likes Drinkwitz, they recognize Gator fans wouldn't be too excited.

This is for good reason, as Drinkwitz once again fell flat on his face against a ranked opponent over the weekend.

No. 9 Alex Golesh - USF

We're taking James Franklin and Jon Gruden off the list and adding Alex Golesh. The USF coach has done some good things in Tampa, and has USF in contention for its third ten-win season ever, but every time USF could take one massive step forward, he seems to take a step back.

No. 8 Jon Sumrall - Tulane

There was some buzz last week when it came out that Florida was going to interview Jon Sumrall, only for that to fall through. Sumrall might be a good coach, but Florida is not in a position to take a swing at a G5 coach.

No. 7 Jeff Brohm - Louisville

We were initially high on Brohm, but his warts have become far too obvious as Louisville went from a potential playoff team to a team that is in freefall.

No. 6 Brent Key - Georgia Tech

They had a clear path to the playoffs and blew it. As we have said throughout, we don't dislike Brent Key but he tends to play a low margin of error style of game that eventually comes back to haunt teams.

No. 5 Glenn Schumann - Georgia

The Georgia defensive coordinator hasn't had a ton of recent buzz, but he's still a guy we would be intrigued by.

No. 4 Jedd Fisch - Washington

There also hasn't been a ton of recent buzz around Jedd Fisch, but we have to keep him in mind as a Plan B. He blew out UCLA over the weekend, but still seems in line to have a "nice" season rather than a season that makes him the "it" guy.

No. 3 Lincoln Riley - USC

The issue with Riley is that time and time again, he continues to fall short in big games. When he was at Oklahoma, he didn't win a single playoff game. And now at USC, he keeps scuffling every time the Trojans have a chance to make noise.

Riley has claimed he wants to stay in Los Angeles, but we've seen that film before from Riley.

No. 2 Brian Hartline - Ohio State

We had written previously that Florida's next head coach needs to be a sitting Power Four coach, as the Gators don't need to go through a coach who has to learn on the job.

But as all the other Plan B options continue to faceplant, Ohio State's offense continues to embarrass everyone, and at this point, we would be willing to take a shot on him over some others.

No. 1 Lane Kiffin - Ole Miss

In theory, this upcoming weekend will be when we find out if Kiffin is coming or not.

Or maybe it isn't, who knows.

All we know is that the only appropriate way to settle this is for Kiffin to go Lebron James style and have The Decision 2.0.
