Position by position breakdown of Florida Football's depth chart
The first official depth chart is out for Florida Football ahead of its matchup and there are plenty of spots along the chart that caused some raised eyebrows.
Now we have to take this chart with a grain of salt because we have seen in the past where Billy Napier will list a guy as a starter only to barely play him. It's with that in mind we look at each position group to see what caught our eye.
Quarterback
No surprises here as Graham Mertz is the starter, and DJ Lagway is the backup.
Running back
The big headline here is that Montrell Johnson is listed as ready to go for Saturday after having knee surgery at the start of camp. Napier claims Johnson is cleared and ready to go.
We will believe it when we see it.
Also notable is that Jadan Baugh is listed ahead of Ja'Kobi Jackson after many of the rumblings had him as next in line.
Wide Receiver
Elijhah Badger getting the nod ahead of Kahleil Jackson is notable because most reports were hinting Jackson would be the starter.
For the record, we would prefer Badger.
Tight End
No surprises here everyone seems slotted as expected.
Offensive Line
The subject of a ton of speculation, the only deviation from what had been the starting core is Kamryn Waites being listed ahead of Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson at RT.
Crenshaw-Dickson transferred in with solid metrics from San Diego State, but reports kept hinting he hadn't locked down the spot after starting in the spring game.
Waites tore his Achilles last offseason and eventually got significant snaps against Missouri and FSU, allowing a sack in each game.
Defensive Line
The EDGE guys have no surprise, but along the interior, it's Desmond Watson being listed ahead of Cam Jackson and Caleb Banks ahead of Joey Slackman.
Banks over Slackman isn't surprising, but Watson is considered he was relegated to 175 total snaps last season and outside of Utah and Arkansas didn't get more than 20 in a single game.
Linebackers
No shock here as Shemar James and Pup Howard get the nod. Transfer George Gumbs listed as starter at SAM indicates he may get some shine in this game as well.
Secondary
All the starters are as expected as Jason Marshall, Devin Moore, and Sharif Denson will be the front line corners while Jordan Castell and Asa Turner will get the start at safety.
Kick Returners
With Tank Hawkins being listed as injured with a shoulder issue he picked up in Florida's last scrimmage, Tre Wilson and Chimere Dike are listed as the two potential punt returners.
As long as Florida can get 11 guys on the field, we aren't against more opportunities to get the ball into Wilson's hands.
