The Florida Gators are creating a new team identity under head coach Todd Golden. After a 24-12 season and making it to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in three years, the Gators aren't sitting back. Instead, they're tackling their defensive problems head-on, trying to match their high-scoring offense with better defense.

Last season, the Gators were impressive on offense. They ranked 12th in the country in offensive efficiency and set a team record with 85.6 points per game. But their defense was weak, ranking 93rd in efficiency and last in the SEC in forcing turnovers. This weakness hurt them in the NCAA Tournament, where Colorado shot 63% and beat them 102-100 in the first round.

Seeing the need for change, Coach Golden made John Andrzejek the new defensive coach. Andrzejek, in his second year as a UF assistant, brings experience from Washington State, where his teams were consistently good at defense.

The change in focus is clear in practice. There are now lots of defensive drills, including one-on-one "pride" drills, wing denials, and pick-and-roll defense. Players are also talking more during practice, with Andrzejek constantly coaching them.

The Gators are focusing on four main areas of defense:

  1. Getting back quickly on defense after scoring
  2. Better defense against screens
  3. Stopping straight drives to the basket
  4. Better rebounding on defense

Key players like Walter Clayton Jr. and Will Richard are more committed to defense after going through NBA evaluations. Their attitude is helping the whole team focus on defense.
The Gators also brought in new players who are good at defense. Alijah Martin from Florida Atlantic helps defend the perimeter, while Rueben Chinyelu and Sam Alexis add height and strength inside. Along with returning players like Alex Condon, Florida now has a potentially strong defensive lineup.

Condon, who did well in his first year, has been working on getting stronger and quicker to defend better. His progress, along with tough practice sessions against new player Chinyelu, suggests the team will be better at defending near the basket.

While focusing on defense, the Gators aren't forgetting about offense. They lost some key scorers, but they're still confident in their ability to score. They hope better defense will lead to more fast-break chances, making their offense even better.

One specific area they're working on is defending the pick-and-roll play. Even though they were good at this last year, the coaches think they can do better. Last season, they mostly used a "drop" defense against pick-and-rolls, which worked well to stop three-pointers but sometimes gave up mid-range shots. This season, they might try different ways to defend these plays to disrupt opposing teams more.

People are curious to see how the Florida Gators will do as the season gets closer. Can they keep scoring a lot while also playing much better defense? Will the focus on defense help them win more games? The answers will likely determine if the Gators can do better than last year and go further in the NCAA Tournament.
