Florida Football's LJ McCray Named to Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award Watch List
Florida Gators freshman EDGE LJ McCray has been named to the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award Preseason Watch List, signaling high expectations for the newcomer's debut season in Gainesville. The Maxwell Football Club's announcement on Wednesday adds to the growing buzz surrounding McCray, who arrives on campus as one of the most highly touted recruits in the 2024 class.
The Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award, established in 2018, honors the most outstanding freshman player in college football. The award evaluates candidates based on talent, character, ambassador qualities, and legendary potential. Past winners include notable names like Trevor Lawrence, Will Anderson Jr., Brock Bowers, and Drake Maye, setting a high bar for this year's nominees.
McCray's inclusion on the 37-player watch list comes as no surprise given his impressive high school career and recruiting pedigree. The 6-foot-6, 264-pound defensive lineman out of Mainland High School in Daytona Beach, Florida, was a consensus five-star recruit, ranked as the second best at his position by On3 and the top player at his position by 247Sports. His national rankings were equally impressive, coming in at ninth overall by On3 and fourth by 247Sports.
The freshman's impact was felt immediately at the high school level, where he led Mainland to its first state title in 20 years during his senior season. Over his 35-game high school career, McCray amassed an eye-popping stat line: 133 total tackles (73 solo), 18.0 sacks, and 62.0 tackles for loss. These numbers hint at the disruptive force he could become for the Gators' defense.
Florida's coaching staff and teammates have already taken notice of McCray's potential. Defensive lineman Tyreak Sapp highlighted McCray's raw talent.
"LJ is still coming along. LJ is just so raw. Sometimes he gets out of himself because, you know, it's college football so everything is schematic and everything has to fall into place. Sometimes he gets caught up because he's a natural freak. He doesn't need a scheme to actually affect the game. He can affect the game just by him being him."
This assessment aligns with 247Sports' player evaluation, which describes McCray as a "long-limbed defensive lineman with the ingredients needed to bake into a true nuisance up front." The scouting report praises his fluid hips, lower body flexibility, and improving hand usage, projecting him as a versatile defender who could fit into various schemes and alignments.
While McCray may need some time to adjust to the college game, his physical readiness is apparent. He arrived on campus ahead of schedule physically and has continued to add size and muscle over the past seven months. This development, coupled with his explosive pass-rushing ability, positions McCray as a strong candidate to break into the Gators' rotation early in the season.
As Florida prepares for its season opener against Miami on Saturday, attention will be on McCray to see how quickly he can translate his immense potential into on-field production. The Gators' defensive line, which has struggled in recent years, could use an injection of talent and energy. McCray's presence, along with other newcomers and returning veterans, provides hope for a more formidable front in 2024.
