Florida Football needs just one win on Saturday to reclaim positive headlines
Ever since the clock hit zero on November 25th and Florida Football was officially doomed to a 5-7 season, the entire offseason has been filled with the hopes and dreams that somehow, someway, Billy Napier has the pieces in place to turn the ship around in 2024.
Of course, not all of us are as all in on the vision as some others, but the beauty of this Saturday is that talking season turns into playing season. And with one win on Saturday, many of the concerns from talking season can be wiped away in the span of three hours.
Florida Football: Touch Grass
Pretty much anyone nationally from the outside looking in feels that Napier is on his last stand this season in Gainsville. He's 11-14, facing a brutal schedule, and, well, you know the rest.
The good news for Napier is that the narrative surrounding him and the Florida Gators can change in a heartbeat. Florida's Neighbors to the West took a trip to Ireland this weekend. They went from being a playoff contender with the greatest defensive line anyone has ever seen to the laughingstock of America in one game.
Even though FSU's defeat does nothing to help Florida in terms of trying to beat Miami this weekend, it does in fact raise the stakes from a perception standpoint.
Beat Miami, and suddenly Florida is positioned to reclaim the crown within the Sunshine State. Beat Miami, and suddenly the negative headlines that have hung around the program all offseason turn into a redemption arc. Beat Miami, and suddenly a feeling of hope will wash over Gator Nation.
Of course, lose to Miami and the fears of an inept offensive line, a disorganized special teams unit, and a defense that can't tackle even if it had Madden's suction tackling enabled all become the backdrop a potentially long year in Gainesville.
Thus, the beauty of sports: A zero-sum game where quite literally only one team is allowed to win.
As 50 Cent once said, joy wouldn't feel so good if it wasn't for pain. Florida fans have had plenty of pain over the last three seasons. Given the current landscape of the Sunshine State, one win can trade that pain for plenty of joy.
