The Florida Gators have encountered an unexpected setback as star running back Montrell Johnson Jr. is temporarily sidelined due to a knee injury. Johnson, a key component of the Gators' offense, recently underwent a minor arthroscopic procedure, resulting in his status being listed as "week-to-week" by the coaching staff.

Johnson's impact on the team cannot be overstated. The senior back has amassed over 2,500 career rushing yards and has led the Gators in rushing for two consecutive seasons, surpassing 800 yards in each campaign. His performances earned him second-team All-SEC honors at this year's media days, a testament to his importance to the team.

With the season opener against Miami approaching on August 31st, the Gators may need to adjust their game plan.

Sophomore Treyaun Webb is projected to step into the starting role in Johnson's absence. Webb showed promise last season, accumulating 163 rushing yards on 26 attempts with two touchdowns, while also demonstrating versatility with four receptions for 18 yards.

During spring camp, Webb expressed readiness for increased responsibility, stating, "It's a big opportunity, I plan on taking full advantage of it." This attitude bodes well for the Gators as they navigate this unexpected challenge.

The running back depth chart also includes freshmen Kahnen Daniels and Jadan Baugh, both of whom have garnered praise from running backs coach Jabbar Juluke for their potential and unique skill sets. Additionally, veteran Cam Carroll, returning from an ACL injury, could provide experienced depth if fully recovered.

While Johnson's absence is a concern, it's worth noting that his injury is not considered season-ending. There's optimism that he may return for the season opener or shortly thereafter. In the meantime, this situation presents an opportunity for the younger backs to prove themselves and potentially add new dimensions to the Gators' offense.
