As Florida Gators head coach Billy Napier navigated staff turnover this offseason, one major role remained firmly in his control - offensive play-caller. Despite some fan speculation that he might hand over the keys to the offense, Napier confirmed in a recent interview that he plans to retain play-calling duties for the 2024 season.

"I think it's in the best interest for our team for me to continue to call the plays," Napier told 247Sports' Josh Pate. "If I didn't feel that way, I would have made a decision to make a change."

The decision comes after the Gators had to replace offensive line coach Darnell Stapleton, who departed for the NFL's Washington Commanders. Rather than consolidating coaching roles, Napier opted to hire another dedicated O-line assistant to work alongside veteran coach Rob Sale.

Napier did make one notable offensive staff promotion, elevating tight ends coach Russ Callaway to co-offensive coordinator. However, Callaway's added responsibilities and offensive input won't include taking over as the primary play-caller from Napier.

"We've reallocated some of our responsibilities. I think giving Russ Callaway the co-coordinator title, giving him a little bit more ownership...But ultimately, I feel like it's in the best interest for our team for me to continue to call the plays," Napier explained.

The 44-year-old head coach acknowledged the massive time commitment required to build the Florida program over his first two seasons, saying it was "almost like you're trading a couple years of your life." But now with strong offensive foundations in place, Napier believes he can better prioritize his focus as the play-caller.

"I don't think the place is under construction, I think it's built," he stated. "This is going to allow me an opportunity to focus a little bit more on the things that matter, and play-calling's a part of that."

As he enters year three in Gainesville, Napier is doubling down on doing things his way after an 11-14 start. His offensive management, especially replacing several key playmakers, will likely determine if that approach continues beyond 2024.
