Florida Baseball: Gators announce starting pitching rotation for opening weekend
The 2024 campaign for Florida Baseball gets underway tomorrow as the Gators take on St. John's for the first of a three-game series.
And at least for now, Kevin O'Sullivan has settled on his three weekend starting pitchers for the foreseeable future.
Florida Baseball: Throwing Heat
Jac Caglianone will return in his Sunday slot that he held last season, while the Friday and Saturday starters will be new compared to 2023.
Cade Fisher
One of the more trusted arms out of the bullpen in 2023, Fisher is going to make the transition into being Florida's Friday starter.
Last year Fisher made 27 appearances and logged 49.1 innings, giving up just 17 earned runs. He did make two starts, including in the Regional round against Texas Tech when he went seven innings and gave up just one run on five hits.
Liam Peterson
A true freshman out of Palm Harbor, Peterson was the class 3A player of the year in Florida in 2023. He was rated by Perfect Game as the 8th best RHP.
At 6'5" he is a tall and lanky pitcher noted for his big strikout ability while in high school. Peterson struck out 73 batters in just 39.1 innings of work during his senior season.
Peterson could also swing the bat, sporting a .484 batting average, but it appears that he is going to focus on pitching while in Gainesville.
Jac Caglianone
As the cliche goes, what can we say about Caglianone that hasn't already been said?
But truth told, for all the hype around Jac-Tani, he does need to be more consistent with his command in 2024. He had a nine game stretch during the 2023 season where he failed to go beyond five innings.
He seemed to settle down the back end of the season, but a poor start against LSU in game three of the College World Series doomed any hope the Gators had of winning the national title.
