Before Florida Baseball can win four games in a row, it has to win one in a row
After losing its opening game at the College World Series, understanding the pathway that Florida Baseball has to take to make the championship series is actually quite simple. That doesn't mean the pathway itself is easy or one that teams take with frequency.
In fact for the Gators to make it to the championship series they are going to have to accomplish something that hasn't been done since the 2018 iteration of the tournament.
Florida Baseball: One Win At A Time
Florida will take on NC State today at 2 PM in an elimination game. In order for the Gators to make it to the championship series, they will need to win four games in a row between today and Thursday. Not since Oregon State in 2018 has a team lost their opening game of the College World Series and gone on to win four in a row to make it to the championship series.
But before Florida can worry about trying to win four in a row, it has to win one or their season will end today around roughly 5 PM Eastern time. ,
Taking the mound for the Gators will be Jac Caglianone, who will be looking for an ounce of redemption since the last time he toed the rubber in Omaha. It was game three against LSU where Caglianone was shelled as he struggled with fastball command, and the Tigers jumped all over him in the pivotal game.
Jacob Cozart is the man to watch in the lineup for NC State. He is viewed as a second round prospect in the upcoming MLB Draft and has 19 home runs as a catcher this season. Alec Makarewicz and Garrett Pennington are both hitting north of .350 and both have at least 18 home runs.
While it is unclear as of this writing who the Wolfpack are going to start on the mound, they have struggled to keep teams off the scoreboard as they rank 152nd in the country with a 6.06 team ERA.
In a perfect world, Caglianone goes seven innings, Florida puts up a bunch of runs, and Brandon Neely and Jameson Fisher get to rest another day. That would be the ideal path for Florida to navigate four games in a row.
But you can't win four until you win one, so expect all hands on deck as the Gators look to extend their season.
