Attorney John Morgan gives hot take on former Florida Football coach Dan Mullen
If you have a TV, or a radio, or a car the drives past billboards, then you are familiar with the law firm Morgan and Morgan. Founded by Florida graduate John Morgan, the law firm has morphed into a nationwide firm but has kept their headquarters in Orlando.
With controversy surrounding the University of Florida due to alleged spending from former school president Ben Sasse, Morgan took to X to give a range of thoughts that morphed into support for former Gator coach Dan Mullen.
Florida Football: For The People
Earlier in the week, the student-run newspaper The Independent Florida Alligator ran a story that detailed how spending exploded under Sasse and pointed out multiple examples of Sasse hiring new people and doubling their salary compared to the old person in that role.
In the wake of the report, prominent members from both sides of the political aisle have raised concerns and want a deeper investigation.
Enter Morgan into the chat, who took to X to give a variety of thoughts on the manner, including calling Sasse out for his attempt to refute the story.
Warning: NSFW language incoming.
Now, you might be going, "How did we get from Ben Sasse to Dan Mullen?"
Good question. Someone commented on Morgan's thread that they want him to have this same energy for the Florida Football program, which is when Morgan chimed in with his belief that Florida shouldn't have gotten rid of Mullen in 2021.
He also doubled down on his belief on Sunday.
So there is a lot to unpack here, but that is what we here at Hail Florida Hail do.
It's not unfair to state that Billy Napier has yet to achieve anything close to what Mullen did during his time in Gainesville. Mullen had a top-ten team three straight years and would have made the playoffs had expanded playoffs existed.
But we have repeatedly argued that if Florida's goal is to eventually win a national title, that was never going to happen under Mullen. His recruiting wasn't good enough, and while Mullen was a great Xs and Os guy, the talent deficiency compared to top-tier teams was evident time and again.
Had Mullen been kept around, Florida would have been stuck in the gatekeeper category Penn State finds itself in under James Franklin.
Would we have rather had the year Penn State had last year compared to what Florida had? Sure. But even if it turns out that Mullen is better than Napier, sometimes to achieve your ultimate goal you have to take a step back in order to move forward. Plus, it's telling that Mullen is about to enter his third straight year in a TV studio rather than on a sideline.
Also, this notion that Florida is the equivalent of Vanderbilt is a bit silly. Vanderbilt was 2-10 last season, and nine of those losses were by double digits.
But Morgan's comments do reveal one truth for Napier. We can write all the positive pieces we want heading into the 2024 season and pick out our reasons why we think things will be better, but the truth is until someone has done it, they haven't done it.
And heading into 2024, Napier is 11-14 while Mullen was 34-15.
