As Matthew Sluka proves, Jaden Rashada was the first but not the last bad NIL deal

We here at Hail Florida Hail always try to link whatever is happening in the college football world back to Florida. We are after all a Florida Gators based website. And one of the stains that has hung over the Gators over the past two years has been the botched NIL deal with now Georgia QB Jaden Rashada.

Well, there is another botched NIL deal making waves in the college football world, and it is a reminder that while Florida was the first school to severely and publically botch a deal, it was only a matter of time before someone one-upped them.

Florida Football: Show Me The Money

If you need a recap of the Rashada Saga, it goes like this:

Rashada was committed to Miami but flipped the Florida with the alleged promise of a massive NIL deal. In the lead up the signing day, it became clear Florida wasn't going to pay him whatever number was originally floated. Even though Rashada signed his letter of intent, he never made it to campus after a new deal could never be reached.

The lawsuits and allegations are still ongoing, but at least in the case of Rashada, the Gators were able to make a clean break well before the camp started and were not forced to scramble in the middle of the season.

But it opened the door of "What if this dispute happened once on campus and the season had started?"

Well, enter UNLV QB Matthew Sluka to answer that question.

Sluka transferred to UNLV from Holy Cross in the offseason, and UNLV is 3-0 on the year.

What should be happy times in Las Vegas had turned into a nightmare as Sluka announced he will be sitting out the remainder of the season to preserve his redshirt due to an NIL dispute with the school.

There are two versions floating around of how we got here:

  1. Sluka claims he was promised $100,000 from UNLV, but only a fraction of that was received.
  2. Sulka went to UNLV to ask for more money but was told no.

Whichever side is the correct side, the moral is that a situation like this has always been possible in the wild wild west of NIL.

Rashada may have been the first, but he was never going to be the last.
