As Florida fans dream of a new coach, Urban Meyer claims he's not interested
Billy Napier is still the coach of the Florida Gators because... well we don't actually know why. After losing to Texas A&M on Saturday, Napier is now 12-16 as Florida's head coach and if there is to be any hope in Gainesville moving forward he will be invited to leave after this Saturday against Mississippi State.
Fans have continued to dream up replacements for Napier, but one name floated claims, at least publically, that he isn't interested in coming back to Gainesville.
Florida Football: Urban Legend
The bulk of the fanbase seems locked into going out and getting Lane Kiffin. That's a discussion for another piece. One of the other names that has been debated has been none other than Urban Meyer.
After winning two national titles with Florida and a third with Ohio State, Meyer has been spending his time on Fox Sports as part of their Big Noon Saturday crew.
Meyer made an appearance on The Triple Option and was asked about whether he would consider returning to Florida if/when the vacancy is posted.
Meyer claims he is not interested:
“That ship has sailed. I want that program to do well, so bad. I know so many people there and we gave a big part of our life to that program. But that ship has sailed."
This could be a two-way street from the Florida administration who want to distance themselves from the laundry lists of arrests that served as a backdrop to two national titles.
There would also be question marks about whether Meyer could adapt to the NIL era of college football. Meyer was 2-11 with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021 before he was invited to leave.
Florida's current coach, Billy Napier, will lead the Gators onto the field on Saturday at 12 PM against Mississippi State.
