The transfer portal has been a bit of a sore spot for Billy Napier since arriving in Gainesville. While the Gators have picked up players here and there, Florida hasn't been as aggressive in the transfer portal as some of its SEC counterparts.

When Florida has been successful in the transfer portal, some of their biggest grabs have been during the spring period. However, a new proposal from the NCAA FB Oversight Committee could put an end to the late additions that Napier has been successful with.

NCAA closer to ending the Spring Transfer Portal

According to Yahoo Sports, the NCAA FB Oversight Committee voted today to end the Spring Transfer Portal period and create a 10-day window that would start on January 2.

The Administrative Committee still needs to formally adopt the change.

If it is adopted, though, this could require a massive change in approach from Napier moving forward.

Napier tends to move at a much slower pace in the portal, and one of his endgame goals is to wait and see for the "right fit" becomes available, even if that means waiting until the spring.

Since arriving in Gainesville, Napier has landed notable spring additions such as:

  • Ricky Pearsall
  • Cormani McClain
  • Elijhah Badger
  • Jason Zandamela

On the flip side, Napier also wouldn't have to worry about the situation he had this past spring, where Gregg Smith and D'antre Robinson jumped ship at the last moment, forcing Florida to scramble and land Brendan Bett.

As a whole, it's a needed step for college football to try to regain a sense of stability in the sport. Most are not against players getting paid, but what makes the NFL work is that players are under contract and can't just jump ship every year because they feel like it.

But if this change goes through, it is going to require Napier himself to speed up his process with the portal to fill the needed gaps on the roster.
