Four straight wins for Florida Football to close out the 2024 season have created a sense of optimism heading into 2025 from the national media. Plenty of entities are starting to trot out their "Way too early" top 25 polls, and if you had the Gators winding up in the top 25 after starting 4-5 in 2024 on your Bingo card, then you are one of the few.
But the combination of DJ Lagway and a couple of key returners has people feeling the vibes happening in Gainesville.
Florida Football: Moving on up
Some of the early publications putting their faith in the Gators for 2025 were Bleacher Report and Athlon Sports. Both have the Gators in the top 20 of their "Way too early" rankings, with Bleacher Reports putting Florida at 17th and Athlon putting Florida at 14th.
Brett McMurphy of Action Network put out a ranking today that has the Gators in a similar range, pegging Florida 15th heading into 2025.
All three of those would be improvements for Florida, but all three of those rankings still have Florida on the outside looking in for the 2025 playoffs. Enter On3, who has the Gators 9th in the nation.
Andy Staples noted, "There might be one QB as exciting as (LaNorris) Sellers. Rising Gators sophomore D.J. Lagway finished second in the nation in yards per attempt last year and should improve his accuracy with a full offseason as QB1."
Florida didn't attack the transfer portal like the claimed they were going to do, but they do have Caleb Banks and Tyreak Sapp returning on defense, along with All-American Jake Slaughter bolstering the offensive line.
Add in five-star wide receivers Dallas Wilson and Vernell Brown, and there will be enough talent for Florida to make a run if they can avoid some of the backbreaking mental mistakes that have defined the Billy Napier Era.
