The Miami Hurricanes must have listened to the 1995 song “I’m Only Happy When It Rains” prior to Sunday because rain was the only thing that spared them from a three-game sweep at the hands of the Gators. After Florida won games one and two, rain in the Miami area forced a quick cancellation of game three.

Despite not getting to play a third game against the Hurricanes, the Gators have to be quite pleased with their weekend in Coral Gables.

Florida gets two game sweep of Miami after a rainout

Saturday night’s win had a lot of similar themes to Friday night’s win, where the ultimate deciding factor was Florida’s bullpen. Aidan King got the start but was pulled after 2.1 innings due to cramps. King had given up a three-run home run in the first inning, but those runs were unearned due to a two-out error from Sam Miller.

Florida responded with four runs in the second inning, sparked in part by a Kyle Jones double.

After King was pulled, it was Ricky Reeth who held the fort down for 4.0 innings with just three hits and one run against.

Ethan Surowiec blew things open with a three-run home run in the ninth inning, and Joshua Whritenour shut the door from the bullpen in the ninth.

Kevin O’Sullivan owns Miami

One of the headlines coming into this series is that the all-time series lead was at stake. The Hurricanes had over a 20-game lead in the all-time series when Kevin O’Sullivan took over at Florida, and that had been clawed back to dead even heading into this weekend.

With the two wins this weekend, Florida now leads the all-time series 138-136-1. It’s the first time since 1970 that the Gators have had a lead in the all-time series. O’Sullivan is now 45-19 against the Hurricanes.

Looking ahead

The good news from the rainout is that Florida was able to save some arms ahead of another five-game week. The Gators will host FAU and FAMU during the week before a weekend series against High Point.

It’s hard not to start ramping up the hype train for the 2026 Gators as they now sit at 11-1 on the season and could be 16-1 by this time next week, but if history is a guide, there is reason for caution.

Last year, Florida got out to a 16-2 start and looked just as dominant following a 7-2 win over FSU. Then SEC play started, and we all know what happened there.

But if comparing this year to last, the biggest reason for optimism is that Florida seems to already have a cache of bullpen arms O’Sullivan can trust, whereas, compared to past years, it felt like Florida was searching for anyone who could throw a strike.
