As the clock ticked down in the Gasparilla Bowl and Florida Football was well on its way to closing out the season with a win over Tulane, Billy Napier used the moment to unload his bench and give some guys snaps who normally we seldom see.
One of those players who found the endzone stayed mostly anonymous in 2024 despite having a fairly famous father. But even his father couldn't hide his pride after his sons' first career touchdown.
Florida Football: All in the family
Anthony Rubio came to Florida as a walk-on from St. Thomas Aquinas as a walk-on prior to the 2023 season. Up until the Gasparilla Bowl, Rubio had only been seen in spring games and had not logged an official snap with the Gators.
But as the clock ticked down, Napier put Rubio in, and the redshirt freshman got six carries for 32 yards and found the endzone on a nine-yard run.
Rubio is the son of United States Senator Marco Rubio, who has been nominated to be Secretary of State in the upcoming Cabinet for Donald Trump.
Senator Rubio took to X after the game to express pride and give credit to the Gators as a whole.
"Happy my son scored
But what I am truly proud of is the joy from his teammates and that he gave all the glory to God
#GoGators 🐊"
The Gators finished the season 8-5 after beating Tulane 33-8 in the Gasparilla Bowl. Rubio finished with a PFF grade of 69.0, 15th out of 32 players on the Gator offense.
