There have been plenty of words thrown around to describe the Gators 18-16 loss to South Florida in Week 2: Inexcusable, shocking, stunning, unforgivable -- pretty much any negative adjective in the dictionary.
CBS Sports, in their weekly CBS 136 rankings that organizes all FBS teams from top to bottom, declares it the worst loss of any FBS team during Week 2.
Florida dropped the most spots of any team this week, plummeting 25 spots from their 11th-place perch following the embarrasing defeat.
Florida drops 25 places in CBS Sports poll
I don't intend any disrespect to South Florida; they're a quality team that capitalized on the Gators' mistakes. But let's be real, Florida lost this one more than the Bulls won it.
Perhaps that's why Florida is the most penalized group in CBS Sports' rankings -- not only did the Gators lose a game to a team from the American, but they did so in a fashion where they looked disjointed in all facets.
Now standing 36th in CBS's rankings, Florida is the fourth lowest team from the SEC. They are ahead of only Mississippi State (37), Arkansas (44) and Kentucky (61).
Past the worst loss designation, Florida's 25-spot swing was tied for the largest in FBS -- tying Mississippi State's 25-place increase following an upset victory over Arizona State.
The Gators standing in the CBS136 paints a bleaker picture than the AP Top 25 poll, which had the Gators receiving the fourth-most votes of any unranked team.
If Florida can put out some the fires set ablaze during the Week 2 defeat, they'll have opportunities to pick up wins that could slingshot them right back up into the top 25 of both the CBS ant AP Poll rankings, but the root of the problems may not be fixable in the short term.
A looming matchup with the LSU Tigers in Baton Rouge should tell Gator fans a lot about what the rest of the season will look like.
