It was a “next man up” mentality in several aspects of Florida’s 27-24 victory over Texas, and one of those men to step up was Senior running back London Montgomery. The 5’10”, 192 lb senior saw a little bit of extended playing time at running back (along with his main role as a kick returner), putting together some strong runs against the No. 7 Longhorns.

On the offensive side of the ball, Montgomery had four carries for 20 yards against Texas, averaging five yards per carry, with his longest being a nine-yard run. He gave Florida two first downs and put them in a third-and-short situation once as well.

The senior also had a big day on kick returns. He totaled five returns for 105 yards, averaging 21 yards per return, with a solid 30-yard return for his longest. On three separate occasions, he returned the ball past the 30-yard line to give Florida a great starting position.

With Texas up 10-0, Montgomery gave Florida good field position, taking a kickoff return to the 35-yard line that led to Florida heading down the field to eventually make it a 10-3 game.

Montgomery later got the Gators off to a great start in the second half, returning the kickoff to the 31-yard line, which led to a drive that ended up with Florida scoring a touchdown.

In a crucial fourth quarter, Montgomery had a five-yard rush on second and seven to go, and then came up clutch with an eight-yard reception to give Florida a huge first down on the same drive.

But the biggest moment of the day for the senior came with just over eight minutes to play, as he had a nine-yard rush, followed by a three-yard rush that again gave the Gators the crucial first down they needed, leading to a Florida touchdown and an extended lead over the Longhorns.

After Texas made it an interesting three-point game, Montgomery had a return to the 32, giving Florida a great place to start the drive.

It was a big day for the senior on both the offensive and special teams phases, helping lead Florida to a 27-24 victory, and a big upset over Texas.
