Houston basketball coach Kelvin Sampson and former Florida football coach Billy Napier don’t actually have a lot in common. Sampson came within one possesion of winning a national title in 2025 while Napier was jettisioned from Gainesville as the least successful coach since World War II.
But it turns out both have a common phrase and Sampson used it this week and accidentally triggered Florida fans in the process.
Scared money don’t make money
Sampson was asked about Jamal Shead, currently with the Toronto Raptors. Shead had 18 points, seven assists, and two steals in Toronto’s game six win to push the series to a game seven. It’s quite the performance for a guy who was the 45th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft.
When talking about Shead and his performance, Sampson busted out a line we probably could have done without:
“There's nothing that boy does that surprises me. I just remember how fearful a lot of the teams were that were calling. Scared money don't make money, brother.”
We did give everyone in the headline a trigger warning.
University of Houston coach Kelvin Sampson remembers how fearful NBA front offices acted when it came to Jamal Shead in the draft. ESPN Big 12 guru Fran Fraschilla tried to tell everyone he knew in the league what they were missing.

Now Shead, coming off an 18 point, 7 assist,… https://t.co/26kwvJ0mtN pic.twitter.com/YDcEUj8AfP
For the first year of the Billy Napier Era, “Scared money don’t make money” was the rallying cry for Florida fans after Napier made the quip during an interview. And frankly, in Napier’s debut against Utah he seemingly subscribed to that theory when the Gators upset Utah.
But it very quickly became apparent that Napier didn’t actually believe in that phrase. His play calling going into halftime was often timid and rarely did it feel like Florida was doing everything possible to maximize its chances of winning. Towards the end of Napier’s regin, it became obvious the only money he was trying to make was for his friends and he kept hiring unqualified assistants and bloated his behind the scenes staff with a bunch of people where no one is exactly sure what they did.
Scared money don’t make money does have merit to it if one actually does it. Unfortunately that phrase is forever tainted in Gainesville and it is going to take a long time for Gator fans not be be triggered when someone else says it.
