Jordan Travis throws stones at Florida from his own glass house over Jon Sumrall hire

Most people are feeling Florida's astute hiring of Jon Sumrall, but Jordan Travis is not most people.

To each his own. That being said, there are some scorching-hot takes that are best left unsaid. This would have to be the case when it comes to Jordan Travis' one-of-a-kind commentary on Florida hiring Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall. The former Florida State star quarterback has pivoted to a media career after his playing career unfortunately came to a quick end. He needs some work here...

This take from Travis on Travis Take Two with co-host with Devon Travis needed a bit more marination.

"I think it's like a backup plan, a side chick that you always have around. 'Oh, here he is.' I mean, they wanted Lane Kiffin. They were all-in on Lane Kiffin. We both thought Kiffin was going to UF. So yeah, I just think it is kind of a backup plan. Hope it works. Once again, we're just throwing stuff at a wall and hoping it's working, and that's kind of the world of college football right now."

Not everyone was going to end up with Kiffin, but Florida pivoted once it realized it was a grease fire...

It is incredibly rich for this comment to be coming from Travis. His Florida State Seminoles have gone a combined 7-17 over the last two years. His head coach Mike Norvell had similar success as Sumrall in the Group of Five at Memphis previously, but Sumrall has won everywhere he has been. Meanwhile in Tallahassee, the only reason Norvell still has a job is because Florida State has no money to spend.

Sumrall was a candidate for several SEC jobs, and he ultimately picked the Florida post for a reason.

Jordan Travis does not see the irony in his comments about Jon Sumrall

This is what happens when you throw stones from glass houses. People will throw them right back at you, brother. Even though we can all agree that Florida and Florida State have been under challenging coaching situations the last few seasons, at least Florida did something about it. Hiring Sumrall has the potential to work out because he wins everywhere and he knows how to assemble a great staff.

Sumrall is bringing with him to Gainesville Buster Faulkner from Georgia Tech and Brad White from Kentucky to be his two coordinators of note. While he still has a College Football Playoff to navigate, Tulane is going to promote Will Hall from within to take over for him. Sumrall seems to have a keen eye for picking the right job, as illustrated by his great successes at Tulane and over at Troy previously.

What this should tell Florida fans is that Sumrall has a proven track record of taking jobs he believes he can win at. Yes, Troy and Tulane were in good places when he took over at those schools. However, neither have the resources of a Florida. The SEC is a step up in competition, but Sumrall has arguably been the best head coach in the Group of Five over the last olympiad. He is worth rolling the dice on.

As far as Norvell is concerned over in Tallahassee, he has had his moments, but he seems to have two big challenges working against him as a head coach, as well as two more that are out of his control. In terms of controllables, Norvell really struggles at high school recruitment. He also has gotten diminishing returns with his staff. The guy seems to live and die with the transfer portal at FSU.

When it comes to things that are out of his control, it is not his fault that Florida State is seemingly so cash poor right now, as well as the state of things in the ACC. Then again, he ran to Florida State after a decent run at Memphis in Justin Fuente's extended wake. His successor Ryan Silverfield had enough success leading the Tigers to get his own SEC opportunity with the Arkansas Razorbacks.

To attempt to tie a bow on this, Sumrall is not someone's side chick. He is one of the best up-and-coming coaches in the profession. Norvell has quickly devolved into the other coaching branch of such tremendous snark stemming off the delightful coaching tree of one Todd Graham. No, it does not help his case that fellow Graham disciple Dan Lanning is absolutely thriving over at Oregon now.

Travis may have his reasons to be down on the Sumrall hire, but he was the wrong messenger for it.
