With spring practice over around the country, it is officially “Talking Season” in the college football world. Jon Sumrall has stayed busy on the recruiting trail, but there has to be a part of him that is getting a bit restless from the lack of actual football happening. That restlessness seems to be creeping in around the country with multiple coaches.
With everyone starting to take shots at each other within the SEC, Sumrall couldn’t help but join in the fun with a bit of a troll job himself.
Jon Sumrall takes to social media for a troll job of Ole Miss
Ole Miss and LSU have been at each other's throats all offseason after the departure of Lane Kiffin right before the playoffs. Kiffin added fuel to the fire with a feature piece in Vanity Fair where, among other things, he claimed that one of the difficulties he had at Ole Miss was recruiting due to the perception of racism in the state.
Whether or not that part is true, there was the saga at Ole Miss after Kiffin’s departure, where they had poached linebacker Luke Ferelli from Clemson after Ferelli had already committed to the Tigers out of the transfer portal.
That episode served as a backdrop for Texas coach Steve Sarkisian to take aim at Ole Miss during a recent interview with USA Today, where he did not hold back on Ole Miss:
“At Texas, we will only take 50% of a player’s academic credit hours. You may be a semester from graduating, but you’re going all the way back to 50% if you play here and want a degree. But at Ole Miss, they can take you. All you have to do is take basket weaving, and you can get an Ole Miss degree.”

So where exactly does Sumrall enter this equation?
Well, he took to social media and couldn’t hold back as he highlighted the academic standards that exist at Florida that apparently don’t exist elsewhere:
“Grateful to coach at a top 10 public university that also offers advanced basket weaving!”

To Sumrall’s point, it has gotten very difficult to get into Florida as a standard student. There are legit valedictorians from large public high schools who have received rejection letters from Florida.
On the athletic side of things, there has been some grumbling here and there that Florida’s standards have cost the Gators some players over the years, but it hasn’t seemed to impact Florida’s class of 2027 to this point.
What it also means is that if it is May and coaches are already going after each other, it is about to be a long summer for everyone involved.
