Jon Sumrall's first-ever annual Florida-Georgia game went less than ideally, as Georgia's dominant defense spoiled any hopes of Sumrall's team pulling off an upset. The Gators fell 28-7 in a game that felt all-too-familiar to how the most recent iterations of the annual Florida-Georgia rivalry have gone.
One of the biggest storylines both before and during the game was Florida's quarterback situation. Coach Sumrall opted to start Aaron Philo under center, despite his back-up, Tramell Jones Jr., helping fuel Florida's upset over Texas two weeks prior. Philo was benched for Jones in the first half against Georgia after throwing two interceptions.
Even with the quarterback change, the offense didn't do much better, as Jones threw an interception of his own and finished with 172 yards passing with a garbage-time rushing touchdown late in the fourth quarter.
Jon Sumrall reveals Tramell Jones has an injury that could require surgery
After the game, Coach Sumrall revealed that Jones has been dealing with an injury that "may require surgery" at the end of the season. He did not disclose the specific nature of the injury.
"He's got an injury that may require surgery after the year," Sumrall told reporters. "Tramell really didn't look great with his health. I'm not going to tell y'all his injury because I'm not trying to help other people right now. But he's got a real injury, I think some people are questioning what's going on."
Both Jones and Philo were listed on Florida's injury report leading up to the Georgia game. Philo missed the Texas game due to a shoulder injury he suffered earlier in the season. Per Sumrall, Jones' injury paired with how Philo looked in practice before the Georgia game guided his decision on the starter.
"Rewind [to] the bye week," Sumrall continued. "Tramell really on Thursday of the bye week during our last practice was not anywhere near 100%. I'm not going to disclose his injury but he did not come out of run-action, play-action, plays full speed with the injury he had. It presented worse later in the bye week. Then on the Monday practice just from an execution standpoint, Philo was a lot cleaner earlier in the week, Monday-Tuesday."
Florida's offense has playmakers. Why has Buster Faulkner's offense stopped working?
Sumrall added that Jones had the better practice on Wednesday, but that Philo's stronger three days gave him an edge:

Florida's quarterback situation needs to be figured out in a hurry, as the Gators will look to avoid a second consecutive home loss to Oklahoma next week. Per Sumrall, it sounds he is not committing to either guy under center:

As the wise John Madden once said, if you've got two quarterbacks, you have none. Given Jones' injury, the Gators might be forced to start a healthier Philo in the next four games against the Sooners, Kentucky, Vanderbilt and Florida State.
If he plays like he did against Georgia, it could be a long end to the season.
