Jon Sumrall’s SEC Media Days appearance will be juxtaposed with who Florida's chasing

The schedule for SEC Media Days was released and Sumrall is part of a loaded Wednesday

Traditionally, “winning” the SEC Media Days doesn’t translate into winning actual games on the field. There is also an argument to be made that the sililoques that former Florida coach Billy Napier used to deliver during his appearances at the July event were indicative of the perceived lack of enthusiasm the Gators had as a whole once the season began.

This July, Jon Sumrall will get to make his first appearance at the event. And given who he is slated to appear with, his vision for Florida, fair or unfair, is bound to get dissected more than usual.

Jon Sumrall’s SEC Media Days slot revealed

The SEC announced the schedule for the SEC Football Kickoff Media Days. This year’s event will take place in Tampa from July 20-23. Sumrall is slated to appear on July 22 alongside Kalen DeBoer (Alabama), Mike Elko (Texas A&M), and Pete Golding (Ole Miss).

If you are keeping score at home, those other three schools all made the playoffs in 2025 while Florida went 4-8. Not counting the playoffs, Florida had three more losses in 2025 than those three teams combined.

Given that we have seen Sumrall appear on 15+ podcast interviews this offseason, it doesn’t feel like there is a ton for him to say that we haven’t heard throughout this spring. But all those appearances on podcasts have been done in a vacuum, not side by side with three programs that all represent the pedestal Florida is hoping Sumrall takes them to.

And the key for Sumrall this July is to deliver a message he can actually back up. Napier infamously had the message of “Spot the ball” last year and even stated at last year’s event that:

"At the end of last year, you could argue we were playing as good as anyone in the country. Our development process is working. The organization as a whole is working as well as long as I've been a head coach."

Yeah, that didn’t really work out, and by the end of the season, Lane Kiffin was trolling “Spot the ball.”

If Sumrall can stay focused on substance and not gimmicks, it might just give Florida fans some positive vibes heading into the fall.
