As much focus as Jadan Baugh has received as the engine of Florida’s offense, there is a case to be made that Vernell Brown III is actually the most important player for the offense. Missouri showcased that a team can just load up the box and prevent Baugh from going anywhere. And without VB3 on the field, Florida had no answers to force Missouri to back off in the slightest.
The hope is that Brown can get back on the field this week against South Carolina, and Jon Sumrall seems to think there is a good chance of that happening.
Vernell Brown III making progress towards being on the field against South Carolina
Sumrall spoke with media members over the phone for his weekly SEC teleconference, and he asked about the status of Brown. Sumrall admitted that Brown did not fully participate in Wednesday’s practice, but he is “really optimistic” that Brown will play this Saturday.
As touched upon, Florida might legit need him.
We came into the season thinking that the Gators had a super deep wide receiver room. The trio of VB3, Dallas Wilson, and Eric Singleton Jr. was enough to be one of the best trios in the SEC, but most Gator fans felt confident about the depth behind them. And while guys like Bailey Stockton and TJ Abrams have made some plays here and there, the gap in talent between them and VB3 is massive.
Even Wilson has been a solid wide receiver in his own right, but he brings a different skill set to the table. He is more of the big bodied possesion receiver versus someone who can take the top off a defense. And since Singleton is still working his way back from the ankle injury he suffered in Florida’s opener, the Gators just didn’t have anyone who could take the top off against Missouri, even when the Tigers dared the Gators to beat them deep.
Sumrall indicated that Singleton is also getting back up to speed, so the exciting part is the potential for this trio to finally be back on the field all together for the first time since the opening drive against FAU.
