One of the main storylines to emerge from this past weekend was the status of Vernell Brown III. After Jon Sumrall stated last Monday that it looked like VB3 had no lingering effects from the knee injury that had been keeping him out, but then he was unexpectedly downgraded late in the week and he ultimately missed Saturday’s game.

And after five weeks of having an optimistic tone that VB3 would return, Sumrall’s tone this Monday was far more cautious as he attempted to also defend his star receiver.

Jon Sumrall clarifies the status of Vernell Brown III

At his press conference on Monday, Sumrall made it a point to walk through the steps that led Brown to miss Saturday’s game after it looked like he would play. Sumrall laid out how VB3 seemed fine, then had a setback in practice, and when the swelling in his knee returned it ultimately led to VB3 being out.

Sumrall mentioned that Brown had a minor procedure on his knee Monday morning.

He was then asked another question regarding the idea that has been floating around social media that Brown could have played but has been opting out. It was at this point Sumrall was as animated as he has ever been in a press conference with Florida:

“Here's the official VB3 statement…. He wants to play. He's doing everything he can to play. He's pissed off he can't play, and he's doing everything in his power to play... It's a real injury that we thought we were on the other side of that, then he had a setback last week.

And it sucks. I mean, it freaking sucks for him. It sucks for the team because he helps our team be better. He wants to play. He's doing everything in his power to play football. I mean, I don't know what else to say”

Jon Sumrall’s optimism led to fan frustration

We chronicled on Saturday that up until this point, Sumrall had been expressing nothing but optimism that Brown would return to action. For the past five weeks, he has been classifying Brown’s knee injury as a “confidence” and “pain management” issue. It wasn't implied that Brown just straight up couldn't go.

So it isn’t unreasonable for fans to see someone like Bailey Stockton go from doubtful on Wednesday to eight catches on Saturday and wonder what is going on with Brown. This isn’t saying that Brown’s injury isn’t real; what it’s saying is that Sumrall’s own messaging over the past month helped fuel the idea that Brown could be playing but was choosing not to. Even if you take Saturday out of the equation, Sumrall wasn’t striking a tone the past month of “Yeah man, we just don’t know when he will be back”; it was always a tone that almost expected him to be back.

For Brown’s sake, hopefully Florida can figure out what is going on and get to the root of it because it’s clear that whatever the initial diagnosis he had that led Sumrall to state back in September that he was “really optimistic” about his return just hasn’t played out.
