Florida held their first scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday, and Gator fans online were buzzing, but not for the reason one may think. Select media members were allowed to attend the scrimmage, but they were instructed to keep everything under lock and key. They can ask Jon Sumrall about what they saw at Monday’s press conference.
This had Florida fans turning into their inner Joker and asking Sumrall, “Why so serious?” when it comes to scrimmage intel. There is merit to not being so lock and key because one key position battle still needs transparency, but the fact that this is even a talking point reminds us we need the actual football season.

Does it matter that we know next to nothing from scrimmage beyond message board speculation?
No, not really. It is, at the end of the day, a scrimmage. If Sumrall and crew are worried about intel getting out there that he isn’t ready to be out there, what matters more in the end is whether or not he wins games. Plus, letting media members attend and ask direct questions on Monday enables Florida, in a way, to help control the narrative, with the hope that false information doesn’t enter the echo chamber.
The one area Gator fans are going to be the most interested in when it comes to Saturday’s scrimmage is the battle at QB. As Aaron Philo and Tramell Jones battle it out for the starter, we're still in this holding pattern where Buster Faulkner and Sumrall keep claiming the battle is 50/50. Still, every insider report and projected depth chart that comes out keeps giving the edge to Phillo.

CBS Sports reported Philo was the more consistent quarterback in spring and clearly outperformed Jones in about 10 of the 15 practices.

- Philo: 21-of-28, 193 yards, 2 TD, 2 INT
This is where transparency from the scrimmage will matter most because, as we chronicled last week, fan sentiment online, based on the extremely small sample size of practice clips that keep emerging, has favored Jones. If Philo wins the job, fans want to make sure it is because he genuinely won the job.
As much goodwill as Sumrall has built over the past eight months, if he trots Philo out as the starter and Philo struggles out of the gate, there will be questions about whether or not he won the job fair and square or due to favoritism.
