Ever since NIL became the way of the land in college athletics, there has long been a perception that Florida has been lagging behind others in this space. The Gators aren’t necessarily “poor” when it comes to NIL and have been able to sign their fair share of high-end talent over the years, but Florida has never felt like one of the programs near the top when it comes to its overall budget.
So, despite years of Florida’s athletic department trying to claim it’s a big-time player in the NIL game, new data out, combined with quotes Jon Sumrall just made, paint a picture that Florida is not in fact one of the big dogs when it comes to raising money for athletics.
Florida Gators lag behind in NIL spending
One of the comical check mark points of the Billy Napier Era was in 2024, after it was announced he was being retained for the 2025 season. People from within Florida’s athletic department made sure to run to the press as “sources” to let it be known that part of the justification for retaining Napier was that Florida was going to be “aggressive” in the transfer portal and was going to load up the roster in 2025.
That’s not what wound up happening as Florida grabbed a grand total of five dudes out of the portal. We noted after Ohio State won the national championship for the 2024 season that:
“But that's not Ohio State's fault. They were willing to play ball and spend the money, while schools like Florida only act like they want to spend money.”
After Napier commented that the transfer portal cycle was an expensive one and admitted that "We haven't always signed the flashiest name out of there," we noted that:
“If you are in Team Billy's camp and are confused as to why there are those who may be annoyed, it's because the narrative surrounding Napier in three months went from 'Hey guys, we need to keep Napier so we can spend the money in the transfer portal 'to 'What do you mean we need portal guys? We are good with who we have.'
Florida talked a big game about spending money as if they were shopping at Louis Vuitton, only to conveniently take a detour to Dollar Tree.”
Jon Sumrall says Florida needs more money
Napier is gone, and Jon Sumrall did a good job of retaining the top-end talent on Florida’s roster. He attempted to be aggressive in the transfer portal, but outside of Eric Singleton, he mostly landed on productive but not flashy players from the 2025 season.
Part of that is simply money.
A recent deep dive from AL.com revealed that within the SEC, Florida ranked 10th in 2024-25 in terms of athletic donations. These donations are not all football-specific, but it highlights the fact that Tennessee, for example, raised more than double the money that Florida raised last year.
And if, for some reason, you don’t believe those numbers, there is this quote by Sumrall when talking about Florida’s standing in the NIL game:
"I think there are certain teams that are, I would say, $15 million above us at minimum in college football right now and in our conference. For us to have championship expectations and standards year in and year out, we’ve got to make sure we’re pushing the envelope to get resources like that.”

"The more you’re investing in our program, the more access I’ll give you."
Sumrall claims the gap is currently significant: "I think there are certain teams that are, I would… pic.twitter.com/1wgCboXiks
It’s a fascinating picture being painted because it’s not like Florida has a small fanbase. This is the same Gator Nation that sold out every game of the past few seasons despite a losing record.
But this has not been a fanbase that has been willing to just pour money into the team. Whether that’s skepticism of the program or just a fundamental opposition of fans having to be the ones to fund the players, when simultaneously sitting through commercial after commercial to generate money that is earmarked for others, Florida fans haven’t opened up their wallets with open arms.
