The 2026 Florida football team is going to look vastly different under new head coach Jon Sumrall than it did under former head coach Billy Napier in 2025. Sumrall has come in and completely changed things up in the program, and has made it clear there will be many position battles before the 2026 season.
One key position battle will be the quarterback battle between transfer Aaron Philo and redshirt freshman Tramell Jones Jr., and it is wide open. Sumrall has been open and honest about where the battle stands and neither guy has yet to win it, and probably won't until fall camp.
The Florida offense is littered with quality weapons for the quarterback, and that was clear in the spring game. Now, it will just come down to which quarterback will perform better with those weapons, limit turnovers, and Sumrall is liking what he saw from his redshirt freshman.
Consistency is key in Tramell Jones Jr. winning the QB battle at Florida

In the spring game, Jones showed a lot to Florida fans and to Sumrall as well. In the interview above, Sumrall talked about consistency being the big thing for Jones to show, as his highs were great, but dropping into the lows isn't what Florida needs.
Sumrall has been working with Jones on staying consistent, staying urgent with the ball, helping him have more of those really high highs than lows.
"If he can find that groove and rhythm of being his best every day, what a bright future he's got," Sumrall said. "I really like working with him day in and day out, great young man, fun to be around, great personality, good teammate, and has the physical tools.
This is all interesting to hear from Sumrall, who seems really high on Jones, and it feels like there is a want for him to be the starter next season. However, there is another quarterback in the room, and that is Aaron Philo, the Georgia Tech transfer.
Philo comes to Florida with two years of backup experience at Georgia Tech, only coming in with a total of 938 passing yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions with the Yellow Jackets. Those aren't stellar numbers, but as a backup, Philo at least brings experience on the field at the college level, but so does Jones.
Jones was able to see action in two games last season for the Gators, still ensuring him to redshirt. He saw the most action in Florida's 55-0 win over Long Island University, but he was also brought in for the benched DJ Lagway against Kentucky in what ended up being a 38-7 loss.
Both guys bring experience on the field, and while yes, Jones has more experience in the Florida program, this isn't the same Gators football program it was under Napier. Sumrall has really come in and set his own tone, and it seems like the players are responding.
This is some interesting information when it comes to the quarterback battle, but in the end, it will be decided on the field in fall camp.
