One of the things that Jon Sumrall has not been shy about since taking over at Florida has been the state of the strength and conditioning program for the Gators. While he has never said Billy Napier by name, the implication has been that Florida’s strength program was a mess and Sumrall and stength coach Rusty Whitt have had to work hard to change the culture.

This week Sumrall and Whitt unveilied a new look weight room that they hope is going to prevent some of the issues from the past regime.

Florida gives its weight room a makeover

Whitt took to social media to show off some of the new look racks that Florida is going to be lifting on. Some of the makeover is merely semantics and are just upgraded branding, but the practical goal of the makeover is to make the space more efficient for large groups to train on.

Mind you, Florida just unveilied the now old weight room in 2022 as part of the Heavener Football Training Center.

But it also might be for the better that any trace of the Billy Napier Era is vanquished from Gainesville.

The strength program became a point of contention for Gator fans as injuries piled up every season and Florida seemed to get outmusled by everyone in the SEC. In retrospect, the first sign of trouble in paradise came from a 2022 quote from Anthony Richardson when he was talking about the strength coach Mark Hocke:

“He's focused on your body a little more. For the last staff, they were trying to get us to bulk up and be a lot stronger. But, Coach Hocke, he wants us to be like, a faster team, because you can't really teach speed, but you can get guy's body right so they can move a little faster.”

Florida was neither stronger nor faster than anyone. Hocke was eventually demotted and after Craig Fitzgerald bailed after a month to go to Boston College the Gators promoted Tyler Miles. At least he had a cool motorcycle.

The truth is until we see Florida in action, all the talk from Whitt and Sumrall and all the fancy makeovers mean nothing to he public eye. But considering how poorly Florida’s Pro Day went this year and with what we have seen with “The Gauntlet,” there is reason for optimisim things will be better in 2026.
