Jon Sumrall gets refreshingly blunt about the Florida Gators’ new uniforms

When Florida released its new uniform combinations for the 2026 season, the general sentiment among Florida fans was, “They look nice, but they will look nicer if we win.” As we chronicled last week, Florida’s recent history of trotting out new-look uniforms has brought mixed results on the field.

So whether Jon Sumrall read all the online commentary or not, his comments on Monday were in near lockstep with how the bulk of Gator fans feel heading into 2026.

Jon Sumrall has a simple rule for Florida Gators uniforms: Win, and they look good

At his press conference on Monday, uniforms came up. Sumrall gave an extended answer that started with him saying he believes Florida’s uniforms should always be some combination of orange, blue, and white. Towards the end of his response, he let it be known how he really felt on the topic:

“But I don't spend a ton of time thinking about it. I'm sure everybody thinks that's like all I do all day is put uniform combinations together. Out of those decisions, I would say the administration here and other people that were involved in planning that out with everybody in that room probably were looking at me like, why are you so disinterested in this? Because I really – I could give two s****. I just want to win games.”

Alrighty then.

Somewhere in marketing they probably winced, but his sentiment isn’t incorrect. It’s in line with what he's said all offseason and matches the vibe of Gator fans. Florida’s brand is strong enough that it doesn’t need gimmicks to stand out.

When Florida is winning.

Spoiler alert: Florida hasn’t been winning; that’s why Jon Sumrall is here in the first place.

Sumrall knows this too, and he would later state:

“I mean, if we win, I don't care what we wear. You just want to win. I mean, you can win and wear whatever you want, and it looks good because you won. And you can wear the coolest uniform ever and lose, and the uniform stinks then. So let's win games, and the uniforms will look better.”

And not to keep juxtaposing Sumrall with the previous guy, but the previous guy made it a clear point to wear black rather than the school colors and cared deeply about what he wore day in and day out.

Again, he also didn’t win very many games.

So as 2026 approaches, it’s nice to have a coach locked in on winning rather than trying to look a certain way.
