Florida football is still in its first spring football session under new head coach Jon Sumrall. The spring game is just days away, but Sumrall certainly isn't ready to stop practicing. Throughout spring practices, Sumrall has been up front and honest about where the team is developmentally, and his latest admission could worry fans.

In a conference like the SEC, teams have to have depth, but not just players that can go in and fill a spot, players that can go in and be competitive at that position, and Sumrall isn't seeing that in his team right now. He isn't saying, though, that is something he won't ever see in them, just that it is going to take time.

"I don't feel really good, in full disclosure, I am very uncomfortable with the depth of how competitive we are," Sumrall said. "In this league, you better be. We're not there yet - at all. It's a little uneasy for me. So, we need to challenge some guys to go play football."

Jon Sumrall knows playing and practicing football is the biggest key to Florida's development

Sumrall is ready for Florida to play in their spring game and showcase everything they have worked on in spring practices, but mainly because he knows that it is the best way for guys to get better.

Florida has a lot of young guys coming up this year who are probably going to have to play a lot more than they are used to at a high level. That is why Sumrall loves the opportunity to play in a spring game, because his guys can get the meaningful reps they are accustomed to.

As Sumrall said, there is no better way to get better at football, or really any sport, than playing the game and practicing outside of it. Sports is all about development, and while Florida isn't quite there yet, there is a lot of faith that Sumrall will get them to that point by the time the season starts.
