Jon Sumrall continues to add to the Florida Gators roster where he can for the 2026 season and that continues with the commitment of junior college defensive back Javier Jones.

Jones, who played high school football in Phoenix, is listed at 6-foot-1, 185 pounds and he played 10 games last season for Independence Community College in Kansas, one of the programs that was featured on 'Last Chance U' during the five-year run of that program.

Jones is the latest in a late run of commitments that will provide depth for the upcoming season. The defensive back is likely viewed as a developmental piece and has three years of eligibility remaining. He is scheduled to be in Gainesville on a visit today and could enroll as early as next week.

Sumrall has made several intriguing moves to add bodies to the 2026 roster. Last week, the Gators received a commitment from Jaylen Jordon, a college basketball player turned tight end hopeful, to the roster for his graduate year. Jordon hadn't played college football before, but worked out at the Gators Pro Day and opted to change courses in his athletic career after playing basketball for Jacksonville University and Flagler College.

Another late recruiting target, former Texas State defensive lineman Devarrick Woods, was in Gainesville last week and is looking at Florida, FSU and Clemson as a potential home. Woods would provide some much-needed additional experienced depth on the defensive line after playing over 150 snaps last season with the Bobcats.

Jones is taking a more traditional path and his youth gives Florida the option to add another body to the roster with some time to focus on development and growth. Can Jones compete for playing time next season? Sure. I don't think Sumrall would recruit a player that he didn't believe wanted to compete for snaps. But there's also a long-term vision that the staff believes Jones could help them over the next couple of years as he gets adapted to the speed of SEC football.

How is Jon Sumrall doing in recruiting this offseason?

Sumrall has quickly established himself as a force to be reckoned with on the trail. He likes recruiting and he has a great rapport with student athletes. Sumrall has proven he's not afraid of going after elite players and he has delivered quite a few, including Maxwell Hiller, the top interior offensive lineman in the country.

He also has successfully recruited a highly-touted quarterback, four-star Davin Davidson, one of the best in-state quarterbacks. Sumrall isn't simply falling in love with the star system either. He's trusting his evaluations and taking some players that are a little under the radar, but guys he thinks can compete in the SEC. In today's model of college football, it takes flexibility on the trail, you have to be able to recruit the elite players, recruit for depth, have success in the transfer portal and use the additional roster numbers to build for now and the future. He is accomplishing that.
