One of the major offseason dramas for Florida and one of the first major tests for Jon Sumrall was whether or not the Gators could retain Jadan Baugh. Sumrall made Baugh a point of emphasis in his introductory press conference, and it culminated with a visit to Baugh on Christmas Eve.
Ultimately, Baugh stayed at Florida rather than jumping ship to Texas.
In a new deep dive into how Baugh came to the decision to stay at Florida, one quote highlights that it was more than money that ultimately kept Baugh from transferring.
Jadan Baugh wants to make Florida home
In a piece by CBS Sports, it highlighted a lot of what Gator fans already knew. Baugh was pursued by almost everyone despite not actually entering the transfer portal. It also reemphasized a quip that Sumrall has made this offseason that Baugh is not an easy person to reach on the phone.
But then his dad, Corey Bryant, gave a quote that is refreshing in the Transfer Portal Era:
"You can go to Texas and have a great year, but it'd be just a great year. If you stay at Florida and have another great year, you'll go down as one of the best running backs to ever come through the place. You'll always have a home in Gainesville. You'd put yourself in the same conversation as Emmitt Smith and Tim Tebow."
This component seems to have largely been lost in this era. The number of guys who start and finish their careers in one spot has dwindled to what seems like almost nothing. The actual numbers are higher than perception, but Florida fans have seen the likes of Trevor Etienne, Princely Umanmielen, and Jack Pyburn, among others, all chose to finish out elsewhere rather than one last ride with the Gators.
It also speaks to the vision that Sumrall is trying to sell. Florida is coming off a 4-8 campaign, and if we rewind to December, it’s not like Sumrall was a household name in Gainesville.
Baugh does have a chance to go down as one of the all-time greats. Mock drafts for 2027 already have him as a potential first-round pick. If somehow Baugh were to pull a Thomas Haugh, he has an outside shot of leaving Florida as the all-time leading rusher.
But either way, barring something drastic happening, Baugh’s decision to stay does mean that Gainesville will forever be a place he can, in fact, call home.
