Is Eugene Wilson III playing vs. Tennessee? Latest injury update ahead of week 7
When the Florida Gators take on No. 8 Tennessee this weekend, they will need all the firepower they can bring to the field. That's why Wednesday's injury update was welcome news.
Though several Gators were listed as either "out" or "questionable" for this week, one name that has come completely off of the injury report is that of star wide receiver Eugene "Tre" Wilson III. That means the Gators' best receiver is going to play this weekend.
Wilson has not seen the field since catching six passes for 141 yards and a touchdown against Samford on September 9. After that he underwent minor knee surgery that has kept him out the past three games.
For the season, Wilson has caught 13 passes for 191 yards and a touchdown. Last season, as a true freshman, he hauled in 61 balls for 538 yards and six scores.
Thus, the Gators were counting on Wilson to be a huge part of the offense in 2024. Without him on the field. Florida has gone 2-1 with wins over Mississippi State and UCF and a loss to Texas A&M.
In those three games, Florida has averaged 29.6 points and 251.6 passing yards per contest. They'll likely need more than that to keep pace with a potent Tennessee offense on the road Saturday.
Even coming off of a loss to Arkansas that saw the Volunteers put up just 14 points, Tennessee still ranks 4th in the country in scoring offense at 46.0 points per game. But the offense isn't all that makes the Vols dangerous.
Tennessee also has a fantastic defense. They rank second nationally in total defense (227.6 yards allowed per game) and 15th in passing defense (159.6 yards per game). Also, the Vols are giving up just 9.4 points per game.
Perhaps Wilson's return will be enough to help the Gators muster enough offense to keep pace with the Volunteers in Knoxville this weekend. Regardless, finding out that Wilson will return to action this weekend is great news for the Gators.
