When the Florida Gators lost to USF 18-16 on Saturday, it was the 14th time in the Billy Napier Era that the offense had failed to score more than 20 points. If you remove games against FCS opponents, that means almost 39% of the time the Gators haven't been able to score at least three touchdowns over the past four seasons.
At the center of it all is Billy Napier's insistence on being the primary play caller, and on Monday at his press conference, he doubled down that he would keep calling plays while also revealing part of what has made him fail in the first place.
Billy Napier to keep calling plays in Gainesville
After scoring just 16 points against USF and having to punt of six of their seven drives in the second half, the topic of Napier being the offensive coordinator was raging once again.
Never mind that Russ Callaway was "promoted" to OC this offseason; it's clear to everyone who is still calling the shots.
When asked about it on Monday, Napier was annoyed, almost offended, that Gator Nation isn't bowing at his feet while watching his offense scuttle as every opposing fanbase admits they can pre-predict what's about to come.
And when Napier was asked what he could have done differently, it's easy to see why his reign has been such a failure:
"Technically, I would say I wish I had a few 12-personnel quick games in my pocket down the stretch there in the second half. That's a technical answer."
Okay... deep breath... blink twice... happy thoughts...
WHAT DO YOU MEAN...
No, no, no... deep breaths... basketball starts soon...
But for real...
But seriously, what does Napier mean he didn't have more 12 personnel quick game plays in his back pocket?
If you are not aware, 12 personnel just means one running back and two tight ends on the field, a staple of Billy Napier since he arrived in Gainesville.
He has had four years of this offense that runs 12 personnel about 1/3rd of the time, and he didn't have some quick game plays out of it he could pivot to?
It highlights what we have said all along is among the primary issues with Napier:
He is so hell bent that Plan A is going to work that he doesn't know what to do if it doesn't and never even considers a Plan B.
Others are out here playing chess while he is playing PAW Patrol Grand Prix on easy with assisted driving on and thinking he is on the same level.
Deep breaths... it will all be over soon.
