One month into spring practices for Florida Gators Football, the latest intel on quarterback DJ Lagway remains largely unchanged. The highly touted QB has been present at every practice and participating in non-throwing drills, but he has yet to actually throw a football this spring as he continues to nurse a shoulder injury.
With the Orange and Blue Game next Saturday, fans are starting to wonder whether or not they should be concerned about Lagway's status.
Florida Football: Tiss A Scratch
At his press conference, Billy Napier reiterated that Lagway's daily practice routine hasn't changed and that Lagway will probably follow the same routine at the spring game. This means unless something changes, it's unlikely we'll see him throw in the Orange and Blue Game next Saturday.
Napier maintains this has been the plan all along, but the vague updates have left Gator fans speculating. Some feel this is nothing more than semantics, while others are not as convinced.
AP reporter Mark Long recently claimed on XL1010 that Lagway may eventually require shoulder surgery, though no other Florida insider has verified that report.
As people noted when it was initially announced that Lagway would be resting this spring, he said he had shoulder discomfort last off-season, too. But if four months of rest still hasn't resolved the issue, it's not unreasonable for fans to raise concerns.
We Talking About Practice?!?!
One of the biggest concerns heading into the 2025 season for Florida is Lagway's chemistry—or lack thereof—with his receiving corps. While he's been physically present and active in walkthroughs, the lack of live reps could hinder timing and development with the new offensive unit.
That said, Lagway's performance during the 2024 season wasn't noticeably hampered by the shoulder, so barring a significant setback, this might end up being a minor storyline by the time fall rolls around. Pain tolerance could be the determining factor in how much Lagway can contribute throughout the season.
With the quarterback depth chart's current state, all Gator fans can hope for is that Lagway's shoulder heals before the 2025 campaign begins.
