One of the massive pivot points for Jon Sumrall when he got the job as Florida’s head coach was to essentially part ways with DJ Lagway. The former five-star QB hit the transfer portal and wound up at Baylor looking for a fresh start after a disastrous 2025 campaign.

Baylor is starting their own spring practice this week, and a viral clip of Lagway floating around makes it look like he has a long way to go to regain what once made him the hopeful future for Florida.

DJ Lagway throws ducks to open spring practice

As we say all the time when clips come out from Florida’s practice, it’s tough to discern anything meaningful from spring practice clips. They often have guys going at half speed, and seldom is there much of substance to analyze.

But Lagway’s first day of spring practice raised eyebrows as clips of him throwing some standard deep balls made their way to social media, and people were quick to pick up that his deep balls looked awful, even when factoring in that it was the first day of spring practice.

Does a bad day one of spring practice mean Lagway is doomed at Baylor? No, it does not. But it sure does plant the seed that Billy Napier might have broken Lagway.

Part of why Lagway had so much hype surrounding him wasn’t just his five-star status, but he immediately flashed during the 2024 season. His deep balls were a true weapon, and the hope coming into 2025 was that he could just clean up his intermediate passes.

But as we all remember, a chaotic offseason led to minimal practice time, and Lagway spent 2025 looking like a QB who hadn’t practiced all offseason. Napier’s Ask Madden offense didn’t help, but what was the most jarring thing was that Lagway’s fundamentals regressed in 2025 compared to what we saw in 2024.

Most Gator fans probably aren’t rooting against Lagway to succeed at Baylor, and there is still a pathway for him to be a future NFL QB.

But day one of spring practice at Baylor made it look like the regression we saw in 2025 has continued on into 2026.
