Former Florida Gator and current Indianapolis Colts QB Anthony Richardson is slated to miss the upcoming mini-camp with a right shoulder joint injury that he originally suffered in 2023.
Colts coach Shane Steichen made the announcement on Thursday and didn't commit to whether or not Richardson would be ready by the time training camp starts in late July.
Anthony Richardson's time in the NFL hasn't gone well
The setback is just another notable event for Richardson in what is a quickly growing list of events that have defined his short NFL career to this point.
During his rookie campaign, he suffered a concussion in week two and missed a game. Then, in week five, he suffered a grade three AC joint sprain and wound up missing the rest of the season. It is the same shoulder that is causing him to miss mini-camp next week.
Then in 2024, he opened as the starter but suffered an oblique injury that knocked him out for two games. When he came back, he faced criticism from the NFL world for taking himself out during a game against the Houston Texans, stating after the game that he "needed a breather."
Richardson split time the rest of the season with Joe Flacco, but eventually returned as the starter by week 11, but was inactive for their regular season game against Jacksonville.
The deeper problem for Richardson is that even when he has been healthy, he has continued to be the same boom-or-bust player we saw during his time in Gainesville.
Of the 40 QBs who had at least 200 dropbacks in 2024, Richardson had the worst completion percentage of them all at a rate of 47.7%, a whopping 10% points lower than Spencer Rattler, who was next to last at 57.0%.
And as much as his calling card is being a big-armed QB, he had a completion rate of just 26% on throws 20 or more yards down the field, 38th out of 46 QBs who had at least 10 attempts of such distance.
The Colts added Daniel Jones and Riley Leonard to the roster this past offseason, and CBS Sports recently declared the trio the second-worst QB room in all of the NFL.
