Last year, when Florida Football had one of the top recruiting classes, Amaris Williams was among the treasure trove of talent the Gators were slated to bring to Gainesville. The top 100 overall EDGE from North Carolina committed to Florida in June of 2023, but he didn't stick and eventually flipped away to Auburn in December of last year.
Fast forward one year and Williams is now in the transfer portal after a ho-hum freshman campaign with the Tigers.
Florida Football: When I come around
Williams played 39 snaps in Auburn's opener against Alabama A&M and played well. He had three tackles and two hurries in Auburn's 73-3 win.
However, Williams quickly found himself out of favor with the Auburn coaching staff and only played 16 combined snaps in their next three games. He was listed at one point as probable on the injury report but otherwise seemed to be healthy.
He played 17 snaps against Missouri and 13 snaps against Kentucky, but only saw double-digit snaps one more time after the week nine game against the Wildcats.
Williams finished the year with half a sack, seven total tackles, and four QB hurries in 120 total snaps played.
Auburn went 5-7 in 2024, and Williams has opted to hit the transfer portal. He will have three years of eligibility left.
Florida will probably kick the tires on Williams, though EDGE isn't as pressing of a need as some other areas. Florida did lose Justus Boone and Jack Pyburn to the portal, but George Gumbs, Tyreak Sapp, T.J. Searcy, Kamran James, and LJ McCray are also slated to come back.
If the NIL price is right, Williams is a worthwhile prospect to explore and see if he can still live up to the top 100 billing he had this time last season.
