Florida WR coach target seemingly confirms he is making the move to Gainesville

Before the Florida Gators confirmed it themselves, it looks like a wide receiver coach has already confirmed that he is making the move to Gainesville.

Well, before the Gators could even confirm the news themselves, it looks like the Florida football team officially has a new wide receivers coach.

Marcus Davis, who had emerged as the main target for the Gators' offensive staff, was named as the Auburn Tigers' WR coach in 2022 and worked under Bryan Harsin, Cadillac Williams, Hugh Freeze, and DJ Durkin.

When the Tigers announced Alex Golesh as their newest head coach, other programs started circling, looking to poach assistants like Davis.

This week, despite Florida not announcing his official addition to the staff, Davis changed his social media bio to include "WR Coach at University Of Florida," adding him to the staff of the Gators' new head coach, Jon Sumrall.

Davis played wideout for the Tigers from 2013 through 2016 and even appeared in Auburn's BCS Championship appearance during his freshman season.

While coaching at Auburn, he repeatedly landed top-tier talent for the Tigers' receiving corps, which struggled without a consistent presence at quarterback. However, he is known for truly understanding the game, having played the position himself for years at the collegiate level.

Despite playing his usual role in Auburn's latest National Signing Day and celebrating when the Tigers landed recruits over the last year, Davis is apparently leaving The Plains for The Swamp.

Davis will replace the Gators' former wide receivers coach, Billy Gonzales, who stepped into the interim head coaching role when Florida fired former head coach Billy Napier earlier this year.

With starting quarterback DJ Lagway planning to hit the transfer portal when it opens in January, and numerous other players doing the same, Davis will have quite the uphill battle ahead of him as the Gators try to rebuild and rework a program that has struggled for years.
