There is fair debate as to how much conference tournaments actually matter in the grand scheme of getting a better seed for the NCAA Tournament. Historically, teams don’t always get rewarded like fans make think when making a deep run during this week of the season.

So in one breath, Florida’s seed for the NCAA Tournament might already be decided, no matter what happens this week in Hoover, AL. But in another breath, there is value for other reasons for Florida to at least win a game during the SEC Tournament.

Florida knocks off Vanderbilt in the SEC Tournament

Florida beat Vanderbilt 8-3 to move on to the Quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament, where they will face Alabama. Aidan King was sharp through four innings before he ran into trouble in the 5th inning. With Kevin O’Sullivan keeping him on a tighter-than-normal pitch count, King’s day was done after 4.2 innings and 75 pitches.

But Florida’s bats picked him up, and after Vanderbilt tied things at 3-3 in the 5th inning, Florida responded right away with a two-run home run from Blake Cyr. Hayden Yost and Brendan Lawson also homered during the course of the afternoon, and Jackson Barberi pitched 2.1 scoreless innings to pick up the win.

In terms of seeding for the NCAA Tournament, beating Vanderbilt won’t move the needle much. Florida is believed to be on the bubble for a top-eight seed for the tournament, which would put them in line to host Super Regionals.

But perhaps more importantly, beating Vanderbilt allows the Gators to let Liam Peterson go through his routine tomorrow against Alabama. Whether or not Florida wins, it wouldn’t have been ideal to have Peterson take two weeks off between starts when Regionals get rolling next week. Considering the groove Peterson has gotten into to close out the season, Florida is in position to have a massive 1-2 punch for Regionals next week.

Because ultimately, Florida’s season will be defined in the next two weeks. A run in Hoover is nice, but the standard in Gainesville is Omaha. After crashing out of the NCAA Tournament last year in a somewhat lifeless fashion, the Gators are hoping for a bounce-back run in 2026.
