Before the start of the season, the idea that Florida could make a run to the playoffs was far-fetched to anyone outside of Gainesville. Even those who followed the program in depth squinted and thought a nine win season was possible, but making the leap to the actual playoffs still felt like a massive longshot.
And yet, four games into the season, Florida is firmly entrenched with a clear pathway to make the field of 12 in December, and the only people at this point who would be shocked are the ones not paying attention.
Florida has a clear pathway to the playoffs in 2026
Kyle Bonagura and Mark Schlabach of ESPN dropped their initial 12-team projection for the playoffs. Both have the Gators firmly in the field as either the No. 8 or No. 9 seed against BYU. This is in line with a projection from On3’s Andy Staples, who has the Gators as the No. 7 seed.
Some of this may be just riding the wave of momentum the Gators have had over the first month of the season, but there is real data to back up that this isn’t that crazy of a projection. ESPN’s FPI rating has Florida with a 49.4% chance of making the playoffs. That same metric has Florida as a favorite in every game except against Texas and Georgia.
Translation:
If Florida can avoid an upset the rest of the way and beat Missouri, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, and FSU, they will make the playoffs.
This is where this week’s contest against Missouri is going to serve as a massive early test of the Jon Sumrall era. We have noted in the past how The Man in the Black Polo was desperate to be praised the instant anything went correctly. And yet time and time again they fell flat on their face when faced with a potential trap.
Sumrall seems aware of these traps but has to prove the culture is, in fact, different in Gainesville. Lose this week to Missouri and all these good vibes go away in a heartbeat.
But like we also said over the weekend, even if one was skeptical of the Gators entering the year and didn’t want to hop on the train, this might be the last chance for people to get on the train before it leaves the station towards a potentially eventful December and January.
