Florida’s offense has two games left to dodge an embarrassing all-time label

As the season winds down for the Florida Gators, there seemingly isn't much left to play for other than pride. Florida is eliminated from bowl contention for the second time in three seasons, and at the root of Florida's problems this year has been an anemic offense. The Gators are currently averaging 20.8 points per game, which is 113th in the country.

And as Florida gets ready to take on Tennessee, the Gators have just two games left to avoid joining a list of squads they would rather not join.

Florida has only topped 30 points once this season

Remember back on opening night when Florida put up 55 points on LIU, but things just didn't feel right? Florida took way too many tackles for a loss in that game, and in retrospect, it was a warning sign for the impending disaster that wasto come.

But opening night was the only night Florida has topped 50 points this season, or even 40 points, or even 30 points.

As it stands heading into the Tennessee game, the 29 points the Gators scored against Texas are the second-most points they have put up all season.

If Florida fails to score at least 30 points against either Tennessee or FSU, it will be just the third time since 1970 that it has had fewer than two games in a single season in which it scored at least 30 points.

The last time it happened was 1979 when the Gators won, checks notes, zero games that season.

The other time since 1970 was in 1973, when Florida went 7-5 despite averaging just 16.4 points per game.

Depending on how these final two games play out, Florida is also at risk of averaging less than 20 points a game for the first time since the infamous 1979 team.

Too much talent

Not to dig up the grave of Billy Napier, but the fact that this offense is potentially going to be mentioned in the same breath as the 1979 team is a reminder of just how much of a failure this season was.

Injuries haven't helped, but Florida had coming into this year a five-star QB, two five-star wide receivers, a future NFL running back, an All-American center, and three other returners along the offensive line.

Yet despite that, Florida can barely manage 20 points a game.

One can only hope the next coach in Gainesville, whether it's Lane Kiffin or someone else, finds a way to maximize the talent on Florida's roster.
