Florida’s next test is Texas A&M and a sideline full of ex-Gators

Saturday's trip to College Station is a homecoming for Florida Gators' QB DJ Lagway, who grew up about 75 minutes from Texas A&M.

However, the Aggies are also littered with several former Gators, either on their roster or coaching staff, and while there has been public bad blood, we can't imagine too many pleasantries on Saturday.

Jay Bateman

Jay Bateman was on Billy Napier's original staff in 2022 and 2023 as the inside linebackers coach at Florida. After Austin Armstrong was demoted as defensive coordinator, Bateman was passed over for the promotion as Napier hired Ron Roberts instead.

This helped lead Bateman to take the defensive coordinator job at Texas A&M when Mike Elko got hired ahead of the 2024 season.

The timing of Bateman's departure was controversial, as Bateman left the day after National Signing Day. In particular, former Gator Earnest Graham, the father of current Gator LB Myles Graham, was not happy when Bateman left.

Sean Spencer

One of the critiques of Billy Napier is that he doesn't outright fire people on his staff; rather, he moves and shifts guys around to keep everyone happy.

This is what makes the fact that Sean Spencer was fired after the 2023 season, especially in retrospect, notable.

Spencer landed as the defensive line coach at Texas A&M as part of Elko's initial staff.

Scooby Williams

During his time at Florida, Scooby Williams was an athletic and rangy linebacker who also struggled significantly with knowing where he was actually supposed to be.

Williams showed some flashes here and there, but had a PFF grade of 43.0 in 2023 and left Gainesville for College Station.

He was getting significant snaps to open 2025, but got hurt against Notre Dame. Williams is listed as questionable for Saturday, but Texas A&M seems to think he will be back for the game.

T.J. Searcy

Among the most notable of players from Florida to hit the transfer portal this past offseason, T.J. Searcy was a mainstay in the Gator EDGE rotation last year and took 362 snaps in 2024.

On paper, Searcy would have had a similar role with Florida in 2025, but he wound up at Texas A&M instead.

This year, Searcy is playing about 30 snaps a game and has four QB pressures to go along with seven total tackles.

Izaiah Williams

If you don't follow recruiting, then this is a name you probably wouldn't recognize, but Izaiah Williams was verbally committed to the Gators as part of their class of 2024.

In fact, the wide receiver was committed to Florida all the way to Signing Day, when he flipped and went with Texas A&M.

Last year, he appeared in three games and had two catches. This year, he has appeared in three games and has yet to register a catch.
