Florida’s next season could be about much more than just getting back to the WCWS

Florida should be loaded up to make another run at Oklahoma City in 2027

Now that the drama from this weekend is starting to wind down and the dust from the Florida and Texas Tech series is settling, there is no other option but to look ahead to the 2027 season for the Gators. For as critical as we have been over how the Gators handled their own emotions during the weekend, we are also not going to sit back and pretend that Florida Softball is some dumpster fire of a program.

Although as disappointing as the 2026 campaign ended, the Gators are set up to make it back to Oklahoma City in 2027 and perhaps go on the type of run that has alluded them for quite some time.

Florida Softball aims to be back in 2027

As we hinted at going into the NCAA Tournament, the simple reality is that Florida just didn’t have the pitching depth needed to navigate this tournament. Once Ava Brown went down with her injury back in February, it was basically Keagan Rothrock or bust for Florida in the circle. The fact that Tim Walton didn’t trust his staff to relieve Rothrock and close things out in game two after Florida took a massive lead was as telling a sign as any that the Gators just didn’t have a second pitcher to lighten the load.

If Brown can recover and get back in the circle for 2027, that alone will give Florida a needed 1-2 punch. But it is also important not to forget that the Gators have top rated high school prospect Caroline Stanton waiting in the wings. Stanton joined the Gators as an early enrollee this season and trained with the team while she redshirted the 2026 season.

Florida will need to replace Jocelyn Erickson and Kenleigh Cahalan, who were two of Florida’s big power bats this season. But a 1-2-3 of Brown, Taylor Shumaker, and Townsen Thomas, combined with the potential for one of Florida’s deepest pitching staffs it has had in quite some time, sets up a very solid foundation ahead of the transfer portal opening.

2027 will be a critical year for Tim Walton

We noted this one on Monday, but trying to fairly evaluate expectations for Florida Softball can sometimes feel tricky. Since 2018, they have been tied for the 4th most WCWS appearances of any team in the country, and they are still to this day one of just four teams located east of the Mississippi River to ever win a national title in softball.

It’s also not unfair to state that Florida has fallen into a bit of a gatekeeper category within the world of college softball.

Since 2018, Florida has been 5-10 at the WCWS. Right now, that is tied for just the 7th-most total wins in Oklahoma City since 2018, and Florida could drop to a tie for 9th by the end of the 2026 WCWS, as Tennessee and Texas Tech could pass them.

The other problem is that Florida has been run-ruled in four of those ten losses since 2018. Of the 12 other teams that have played at least six games at the WCWS since 2018, those 12 teams have a combined six run-rule losses.  To put it another way, those 12 teams have been run-ruled in just 3% of the WCWS they have played in. Florida has been run-ruled in 27% of the WCWS they have played in since 2018.

Translation:

Florida is a good program, and there is a reason why they won 52 games in 2026.

They have also fallen behind the true elites of college softball. And with programs like Texas Tech, Nebraska, and even Arkansas starting to rise up the rankings, there is going to be more and more competition at the top of the mountain.

2027 is a chance to flip that narrative around if Florida reaches the potential that they will have on paper.
