Florida's landed 29 guys out of the transfer portal, but few have been impact players

Jon Sumrall talked in his press conference on Monday about the fact that he feels he didn’t do a good enough job evaluating the roster for Florida, and he attributes the fact that he finished out the season with Tulane as part of the issue.

In total, Florida added 29 players to the roster via the transfer portal and when one breaks down the list of who they brought to town, there has been a lot left to desire from Florida’s transfer portal haul from last offseason.

Looking back at who Florida grabbed out of the transfer portal last offseason

Riding the bench

Ace Ciongoli, WR: 0 games; has not played.

Mason Clinton, DL: 0 games; no appearances or recorded stats.

Hunter Solwold, LS: 3 games; 13 special teams snaps.

Jordy Lowery, CB: 3 games; 2 tackles.

Cam Dooley, S: 5 games; 2 tackles.

Miller Fealy, P: 0 games; has not played.

Eagan Boyer, OT: 1 game; 10 snaps at left tackle.

Carter Milliron, LS: 4 games; 13 special teams snaps.

Liam Padron, K: 1 game; 1-for-1 on extra points; no field-goal attempts.

Jaylen Lloyd, WR: 0 games; has not played.

Of this list, there aren’t too many surprises outside of Cam Dooley and Eagan Boyer. Dooley was defensive coordinator Brad White’s handpicked safety he brought over with him from Kentucky, while Boyer was the handpicked tackle offensive line coach Phil Trautwein brought from Penn State. For both of them to be relegated to the bench is a bit eyebrow-raising.

Playing but with minimal impact

Eric Singleton Jr., WR: 6 games; 13 catches for 101 yards and 0 touchdowns; 5 carries for 10 yards.

Evan Pryor, RB: 8 games; 19 carries for 41 yards; 6 catches for 28 yards; 0 touchdowns.

London Montgomery, RB: 8 games; 13 carries for 56 yards; 2 catches for 14 yards; 0 touchdowns. Also 15 kickoff returns for 356 yards, with a long of 74 yards.

Lacota Dippre, TE: 8 games; 6 catches for 49 yards and 2 touchdowns; 2 kickoff returns for 30 yards.

Evan Chieca, TE: 6 games; 1 catch for 11 yards and 0 touchdowns; 100 total snaps.

Micah Mays Jr., WR: 8 games; 7 catches for 57 yards and 0 touchdowns.

TJ Bullard, LB: 8 games; special teams appearances in all eight games; no recorded tackles.

Eric Singleton got hurt five plays into the season and just hasn’t emerged as a viable receiver on this squad. Evan Pryor was someone we thought was going to emerge as a solid RB2, but he was beat out by Duke Clark. London Montgomery has actually been decent enough as a kickoff returner but has been minimal as a running back.

Micah Mays was a spring game breakout but has been relegated in the receiver rotation. TJ Bullard being on special teams doesn’t surprise us. Lacota Dippre had two touchdowns against Texas, but his overall impact has felt mitigated.

Playing, but it’s complicated

Aaron Philo, QB: 7 games; 110-for-156 passing for 1,367 yards, 9 touchdowns and 5 interceptions, completing 70.5% of his passes. Also 44 carries for 104 yards and 3 rushing touchdowns.

TJ Shanahan Jr., OG: 8 games, all starts at right guard; 516 offensive snaps.

Luke Harpring, TE: 8 games; 14 catches for 165 yards and 0 touchdowns.

DK Kalu, DL: 8 games; 7 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, 1 forced fumble and 1 quarterback hurry.

Kanye Clark, STAR: 8 games; 25 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 1 pass breakup, 3 quarterback hurries and 1 fumble recovery.

Emeka Ugorji, OT: 8 games, all starts at right tackle; 531 offensive snaps.

Harrison Moore, C: 8 games, all starts; 547 offensive snaps.

All of these guys have been mainstay faces for Florida, but their impact hasn’t been great. All of the offensive line pickups have been middling at best. Aaron Philo got benched against Georgia, Luke Harpring has had some positive moments, but it hasn’t been consistent; same goes for DK Kalu, and Kanye Clark has had struggles at the STAR position.

Solid portal pickups

Bailey Stockton, WR: 8 games; 35 catches for 365 yards and 2 touchdowns; 3 punt returns for 47 yards.

Emmanuel Oyebadejo, DL: 7 games; 14 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, 3 pass breakups, 5 quarterback hurries and 1 forced fumble.

DJ Coleman, S: 8 games; 32 tackles, 2 interceptions, 1 tackle for loss, 3 pass breakups, and 1 forced fumble.

Alec Clark, P: 8 games; 26 punts for 1,248 yards, averaging 48.0 yards; long of 75 yards; 11 punts inside the 20. Also 1 carry for 13 yards.

Patrick Durkin, K: 8 games; 11-for-12 on field goals, with a long of 53 yards; 33-for-33 on extra points; 66 points.

The fact that of the 29 transfer portal pickups that Gators grabbed, only five of them have been solid, and two of those are kickers, says something about Florida’s transfer portal haul. The key will be whether Sumrall believes part of the struggle was being split between Tulane and Florida, and whether the portal haul will be better in 2027.
