If prior to Saturday’s contest between Florida and Auburn one had said that Thomas Haugh would score 27 points, Urban Klavzar would come off the bench and score 12 points, and the Gators as a whole would hold Auburn to 33 points in the second half, then one would probably have assumed that the Gators would win and probably cover the 11.5 point spread set before the game.
Oops.
Self-inflicted wounds and a poor first half gave Florida a hole it couldn’t dig out of as the Gators lost 76-67 to Auburn at home.
Alex Condon scores one point
There is a meme online that goes:
“I’m doing my part. I’m doing my part. I didn’t do f***ing s***!”
That last part unfortunately fits Alex Condon’s afternoon.
He did some good things on the defensive end and had three blocks and a steal to go along with nine rebounds. But on the offensive end of the court, Condon had one point off 0-4 shooting and 1-2 from the free-throw line. He also had four turnovers.
Some of this was Auburn essentially daring Condon to either shoot a three or to drive into the lane and be met with a wall of Tigers. And if we are being fair to Condon, it breaks a streak of nine straight games with at least ten points.
But considering Condon came into the year as a preseason All-American and was a borderline first-round pick in the NBA Draft had he left after last year, it’s been Haugh who has taken the leap we all expected Condon to take.
The most notable flaw in his game right now is the fact that his three-point shooting has completely collapsed. He was a competent three-point shooter last year, and now teams are just backing off and are begging Condon to take a three because they have no fear of him making it.
Florida now drops to 14-6 on the season and 5-2 in SEC play. Next up for the Gators is South Carolina on Wednesday before taking on Alabama next Sunday.
